A busy week, a difficult see-you-soon and my VERY important thoughts on Katz's Delicatessen!
Hi there friends!
I’ve had the busiest week I possibly could have in grad school. This week (and it isn’t over yet) included seven deadlines and a day of working (the part-time job I do) and saying see-you-soon to my partner after his month-long visit here … it’s been busy. I’m also been preparing for my talk in Atlanta in two weeks at NICAR. Speaking of NICAR, I have news! I was awarded a stipend to attend the conference and not having to worry about the money bit is extremely helpful.
Onwards!
Here’s some fun things I read this week:
The personal essay talks about “… the extent to which cheap, hollow, and meaningless stuff has infiltrated even the most private parts of our lives, bearing down onto, and burrowing into, our most vulnerable selves, where it is especially insidious and inviting.”
Happy Twosday! Why numbers like 2/22/22 have been too fascinating for over 2,000 years
Just a fun light read on why we’re obsessed with finding amusement in coincidental patterns such as the date being 22/2/22!
The mathematically optimal first guess in Wordle
If, of course, like me, you too are obsessing over the game lately. Although honestly, I propose we bring back our good ol’ Flappy Bird.
I also recently tried Katz’s Delicatessen, an institute in NYC’s deli scene (established in the 1880s!), but umm (I might get banned from the internet for saying this), it felt so overrated! The rye bread was normal, the meat was a LOT and for zing, there was just some mustard on the bread with a side of pickles. I’m not complaining of the simplicity but rather the lack of creativity. I need flavors! The ambience and setting was fun and old-timey and the canned cream soda was delightful!🥤
That’s all for now; I promise to have my schedule better sorted for the issue next week. Until then, have a powerful week! ⚡
